Tanzanian potatoes. Tanzanian fries.

Supa Fries is a frozen french fries brand from Chefry's in Dar es Salaam. We take potatoes grown by Tanzanian farmers and turn them into fries that are ready for the fryer in minutes, for homes, restaurants and businesses across the country.

Our story

Why we started Supa Fries

Chips are one of the most loved foods in Tanzania. Chipsi mayai on the street corner, a plate of chips with grilled chicken at the weekend, a side of fries at a hotel buffet. Behind every plate is the same hard work: buying sacks of potatoes, peeling them, cutting them, washing them and hoping they fry up well.

Most frozen fries sold in Tanzania have been imported, which means higher prices, long supply chains and empty shelves when shipments are late. At the same time, Tanzanian farmers grow excellent potatoes. We saw a simple opportunity: make premium frozen fries here at home, from local potatoes, for local kitchens.

That is Supa Fries. Real potatoes, cut and frozen in Tanzania, so anyone can serve golden, crispy fries without the prep.

Where it starts

Grown in the Southern Highlands

Our potatoes come from Tanzania's Southern Highlands, the country's main potato-growing region. The cool climate, high altitude and rich volcanic soil produce potatoes that are firm and starchy, which is exactly what makes a good fry: a crisp outside and a soft, fluffy inside.

We buy directly from local farmers. Buying direct lets us choose the right potatoes for frying, keep the supply steady through the year, and make sure more of the value stays with the people who grow them.

Why the potato matters

Not every potato makes a good chip. Watery potatoes soak up oil and go soft; potatoes with too much sugar turn dark before they are cooked through. Choosing firm, starchy potatoes is the first step to fries that stay crisp on the plate.

How we make them

From farm to freezer

After harvest, the potatoes travel to Dar es Salaam, where they are prepared and frozen. Every step is designed to keep the taste and texture of a fresh-cut chip.

  • Washed and peeled to remove soil and skin.
  • Straight-cut to an even size, so every fry cooks at the same speed.
  • Prepared with care, so they turn crisp outside and stay fluffy inside when you cook them.
  • Frozen fast and packed, ready to cook straight from the freezer.

We do not add preservatives. Freezing does the job, keeping the fries good for up to 12 months at −18°C.

Every fry is cut straight and even, so a full basket cooks at the same speed and comes out the same golden colour. They are prepared and frozen soon after cutting, which is why Supa Fries come out crunchy outside and soft inside after just a few minutes in the fryer.

How to cook

Golden fries in minutes

Always cook straight from frozen.

  • Deep fryer: heat oil to 175°C and fry for about 3 minutes until golden.
  • Air fryer: 200°C for 12 to 15 minutes. Shake the basket halfway.
  • Oven: 220°C for 18 to 22 minutes on a single layer. Turn once.

Tips for the best crunch

Do not thaw the fries first, as thawed fries soak up oil. Fill the basket only halfway so the oil stays hot, shake off any ice before frying, and add salt straight after cooking while the fries are still hot.

Keep unopened packs at −18°C. Once fries have thawed, cook them the same day and do not refreeze.
