Someone at the table always says it: "Chips again? Those aren't healthy." Maybe you have said it yourself while reaching for one more. Fries carry a bad name, but most people have never looked at what is actually in a pack of frozen fries, or at how much the way you cook them changes the answer. Before you decide whether to feel guilty, let us look at the facts.

Here are seven honest facts about frozen french fries, so you can enjoy them without guesswork. This is general information, not medical advice. If you follow a special diet, speak to your doctor or a dietitian.

1. Good frozen fries are mostly just potatoes

Quality frozen fries are made from potatoes that are washed, peeled, cut and frozen. The ingredients list should be short. Potatoes themselves are a source of energy, and also give potassium, vitamin C and some fibre.

2. Freezing keeps them fresh, not chemicals

Freezing is one of the oldest ways to keep food (here is how to store frozen fries well). At −18°C, fries keep for months without needing preservatives. Supa Fries contain none. Not every brand is the same, so check the pack.

3. How you cook them matters most

Deep frying adds the most fat. An air fryer or oven adds very little. If you deep fry, hot oil at 175°C and a quick drain help the fries absorb less oil than cooler oil does.

4. You control the salt

Plain frozen fries are usually not heavily salted, so you decide how much to add. Taste first, salt lightly, and go easy on salty sauces. The World Health Organization recommends adults eat less than 5 g of salt a day.

5. Golden is better than dark brown

Starchy foods cooked very dark form more acrylamide, a substance food safety agencies advise limiting. The UK Food Standards Agency's simple advice is to "go for gold": cook fries to a golden yellow colour.

6. Fresh oil is better oil

Oil that has been used again and again breaks down, smells strong and tastes bitter. Change frying oil regularly, and use a neutral oil that handles high heat, such as sunflower or vegetable oil.

7. Portion and balance make the difference

A sensible portion is about 100 to 150 g of fries. Pair them with protein like eggs, chicken or fish, and something fresh like kachumbari or a salad, and fries become part of a balanced meal.

In short

Frozen fries can be part of a healthy diet when you choose fries with simple ingredients, cook them with little oil (an air fryer or oven is best), keep portions to about 100 to 150 g and fry them golden rather than dark brown. The potato itself is a good food. What makes fries more or less healthy is mostly the oil, the salt and how much you eat.

Frequently asked questions

Are frozen fries healthier than fresh fries?

Not by themselves. The biggest difference comes from how you cook them. Frozen fries cooked in an air fryer or oven use much less oil than fresh chips deep-fried at home.

Do frozen fries have preservatives?

Some brands do, many do not. Freezing keeps fries fresh without preservatives. Supa Fries contain no preservatives. Always read the pack.

What is the healthiest way to cook frozen fries?

In an air fryer at 200°C for 12 to 15 minutes, or in the oven at 220°C for 18 to 22 minutes. Both use little or no extra oil.

Can I eat frozen fries on a diet?

Yes, in sensible portions. Keep to about 100 to 150 g, cook them in an air fryer or oven, go easy on salt and sauces, and add vegetables or a salad.

Are frozen fries bad for you?

No single food makes a diet good or bad. Fries are fine as part of a balanced diet. Watch portion size, oil and salt, and fry them golden rather than dark brown.
