Do air fryer fries taste the same as deep fried?

Close, but not identical. Deep frying surrounds every fry with hot oil, which gives a crunchier shell and a richer taste. An air fryer works like a small, powerful fan oven: it crisps the outside with hot moving air. Frozen fries do especially well in air fryers because they are already prepared to crisp quickly.

Are air fryer fries healthier?

Generally yes, because they absorb far less oil, which means less fat and fewer calories per portion. Whatever method you use, cook fries to golden yellow rather than dark brown, which lowers acrylamide. For more, read are frozen fries healthy?

How do you cook frozen fries in a deep fryer?

Full detail, including the oven and pan methods, is in how to cook frozen fries.

Which should you choose?

Which costs more to run?

An air fryer usually costs less to run day to day. It uses no oil (or a teaspoon), and while it draws electricity, it cooks small portions quickly without heating a whole oven. A deep fryer needs litres of oil that must be changed regularly, plus gas or electricity to keep it hot. For a family that eats chips a few times a week, the oil saving alone is noticeable. For a business frying all day, the deep fryer's speed and capacity matter more than its running cost.

What should you look for when buying an air fryer?

How do you get the best fries from an air fryer?

  1. Preheat. Fries in a hot basket crisp faster.
  2. Do not overfill. Half full at most. Cook two batches rather than one crowded one.
  3. Shake every 5 minutes so all sides crisp.
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of oil if you want extra colour and for seasoning to stick.
  5. Season at the end, especially salt.
  6. Clean the basket after each use; old crumbs burn and smoke.

How do you deep fry safely at home?

What else can each one cook?

Air fryerDeep fryer
Chicken pieces and wingsChicken and battered fish
Samosas (brushed with oil)Samosas, bajia, maandazi
Roasted vegetablesMihogo (cassava) chips
Reheating leftoversDoughnuts and fritters
SausagesLarge batches of chips

Air fryers are excellent for reheating fries, while deep fryers handle traditional favourites like maandazi and cassava chips.

Does cooking method affect acrylamide?

Any high-heat cooking of potatoes forms some acrylamide, whether in oil, an air fryer or an oven. What matters most is colour: cook to golden, not brown. Air fryers can over-brown thin fries quickly, so check them a few minutes before the time is up. Read acrylamide in fries for the full picture, and the UK Food Standards Agency's advice.

Which takes up less space and effort?

An air fryer sits on the counter, plugs into a normal socket and needs only a quick wash of the basket after use. A deep fryer needs space away from water, a place to store or dispose of oil, and regular filtering and cleaning. In small city kitchens, the air fryer usually wins on convenience. In a restaurant, the deep fryer earns its space because of speed and volume. If you deep fry at home, a fryer with a lid, a filter and a thermostat is much easier to live with than an open pot of oil on the stove.

Can you use both in one meal?

Yes, and many cooks do. For chips kuku, air fry the marinated chicken while the deep fryer handles the chips in 3 minutes at the end. For a party, keep the deep fryer running for chips and use the air fryer for wings or samosas. Using both means each appliance does what it does best, and food comes out at the same time. See how to make chips kuku and our event catering guide.

Which works better with power cuts?

An air fryer runs on electricity, so it stops during a power cut. A deep fryer can be gas or electric; gas fryers keep working when the power goes, which is why many chips spots in Tanzania prefer gas. At home, a pot of oil on a gas stove also works, with care and a thermometer. If power cuts are common where you live, it helps to have one gas option.

Whichever you choose, the fries themselves matter too. Even-cut frozen fries cook predictably in both appliances, so you get the same golden result every time, whether it is a quick air-fried weeknight dinner or a deep-fried party batch.

In short

A deep fryer makes the crispiest, most classic fries in about 3 minutes and handles large batches, so it is better for restaurants and big families. An air fryer uses little or no oil, is cleaner and safer, and makes very good fries in 12 to 15 minutes, so it is better for everyday home cooking and lower-fat meals. Frozen fries work well in both.

Frequently asked questions

Are air fryer fries as crispy as deep fried?

Nearly. Deep fried fries are a little crunchier, but preheated, single-layer air fryer fries are very crisp, especially frozen fries.

How long do frozen fries take in an air fryer?

12 to 15 minutes at 200°C, shaking every 5 minutes. Thin cuts take less time, thick cuts more.

Do I need oil for frozen fries in an air fryer?

No. Frozen fries cook well without added oil. A teaspoon of oil helps seasoning stick and adds a little colour.

Is an air fryer good for a restaurant?

Only for very small volumes. Most air fryers are too small and slow for a busy service; a commercial deep fryer is faster.

What size air fryer do I need for a family?

About 5 to 7 litres for a family of four. Smaller 3 to 4 litre models suit one or two people.

Is it cheaper to use an air fryer than a deep fryer?

For home cooking, usually yes, because you save the cost of frying oil and cook small portions quickly.

Can I cook samosas in an air fryer?

Yes. Brush or spray them lightly with oil and air fry at about 180 to 200°C until golden, turning once.

Can I use an air fryer and deep fryer together?

Yes. For example, air fry chicken or samosas while the deep fryer cooks chips quickly at the end, so everything is ready together.

Can I use an air fryer during a power cut?

No, air fryers need electricity. A gas stove or gas fryer keeps working when the power is off.
